Robert R. Taylor, the founder of the modern Calvin Klein fragrance business, died on August 29th in Newport Beach, California. Taylor was 77 years old, and had cancer.

Taylor began his career by creating Softsoap – the first liquid hand soap with a pump. But he is most known for buying Calvin Klein Cosmetics out of bankruptcy in 1980.

Calvin Klein Obsession launched soon after – and it was the most expensive fragrance launch to date. It was also the first that changed the pace of prestige launches – cutting a six-month leadtime down to two weeks.

Later in life, Taylor reentered the beauty business after a short retirement to work with Graham Webb International. He also developed Monterey Bay Clothing Co.

Most recently, Taylor served as chairman and chief executive officer of Robert Taylor Cos., where he pursued various business and philanthropic ventures.

A memorial service will be held November 24th in Indian Wells, California.
